WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

WHO IS AT A RISK FOR GLAUCOMA?
Anyone can develop glaucoma. Some people are at higher risk than others. They include:
- Everyone over the age of 40 yrs.
- People with a family history of glaucoma.
- Diabetics
- People with nearsightedness (Myopia) for open-angle type and farsightedness (hyperopia) for close angle type
- People with Hypertension
- People with Migraines
WARNING SIGNS OF GLAUCOMA
In most cases of glaucoma, the patient is not aware of the gradual loss of sight until vision is significantly impaired. However, if glaucoma progresses without adequate treatment, the following symptoms may occur in some individuals:
- Pain around the eyes when coming out from darkness (e.g., as soon as the person comes out of a cinema hall)
- Colored halo rings are seen around light bulbs, especially in the mornings and nights
- Frequent change of reading glasses, headaches, pain, and redness of the eyes
- Reduced vision in dim illumination and during nights
- The gradual decrease of side vision with the progression of glaucoma
CAN GLAUCOMA BE STOPPED?
Glaucoma damage is permanent—it cannot be reversed. But medicine and surgery help to stop further damage. To treat glaucoma, your ophthalmologist may use one or more of the following treatments.
EVALUATION OF GLAUCOMA
Tonometry: Recording of intra Ocular pressure, Tonometer.
Gonioscopy: The eye is checked with a lens to determine whether it has closed or open glaucoma.
Perimetry: This test is required for diagnosing patients with glaucoma. This test is necessary not only to determine the level of current damage, but also to document and track progress.
Non-invasive tests include OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography) and CCT (Pachymetry). The patient is instructed to focus on a light while the advanced machine and software examine the nerve and nerve fibre layer’s condition.
